Steamer Replica
If you're anywhere near north Florida this winter I heartily recommend a visit to the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, running from March 10-12. Now in its 11th year, this event leads off the classic car show calendar. For 2006 Amelia Island honors the cars of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, famous for its legendary steam-driven cars. Highlighted is a replica of the Stanley Steamer Rocket, driven by Fred Marriot to a record speed of 127.659 mph on the sands of Ormond Beach a century ago. The program will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the "no-holds-barred" CAN-AM racing series. Three-time Indylinks 500 winner Johnny Rutherford is the Concours honoree.
