Crossover: Good Idea, Dumb Name

Filed in archive by philip on April 17, 2006

Suzuki SX-4
A "crossover" is usually intended as a combination of two vehicle categories, where one is a sport-utility. Yet, if you look closely at these vehicles, they're really tall station wagons or large hatchbacks, that may or may not have all-wheel-drive. So-called crossovers are more practical than sedans and designers like them because they offer better design flexibility than a minivanlinks or SUV. The next trend, according to one head designer, is a return to organic design, meaning more fluid, curving shapes. Apply this to a crossover and you get a family vehicle that blends style with logic.
