"America's Most Beautiful Roadster" has been named for 2006, and to no one's surprise, Chip Foose's name is on the trophy as designer, the seventh time he has been involved with an AMBR winner.
This year's winner is a 1936 Ford named "Impression" which Foose designed for owner Ken Reister. Rod and Custom magazine reported:
A Foose Design custom chassis provides the basis for Reister's ride and measures in with a 118-inch wheelbase. One-off suspension components are based on C4 Corvette geometrywith a Corvette center section and uprights. The ride is provided by a set of Bilstein coil over shocks and stopping is handled by a set of BAER/PBR rotors and calipers activated by a Kugel Komponents master cylinder and under dash compact power booster.
The engine was given equal attention with the GM LS1 massaged to resemble a "valve-in-head" Ford, hence the "Flatisphere" moniker. One-off valve covers and ram air intake top a full hand formed steel block cover. The water and oil fill caps have cleverly been hidden in the Flathead-influenced water necks. Cloth covered spark plug wires finish the retro-modern packaging.
The custom '36 Ford influenced envelope was crafted by Marcels Custom Metal Shaping with the body and fenders made from steel and the sleek hood formed out of aluminum. A pair of PIAA H.I.D. projector beam headlights flanks a Dan Fink stainless steel grille. A custom lens creates the illusion of a Ford V-8 logo. Taillights are based on '37 Ford buckets with 13 LED bulbs lighting up each lens. After the custom coachwork was complete the whole thing was coated in BASF paint dubbed "Chipeweter". One-off Foose designed wheels evoke a '30s spoke design and have each been wrapped in hand-cut one-of-a-kind BFGoodrich 18 and 20-inch rubber.
Inside is more of the same amazing quality with a Jim Griffin interior featuring pebble-grained leather covering the modified Cobra bucket seats and carbon fiber door panels. The dash is fitted with '35 Chevy gauges flanked by a one-off steering wheel made to evoke the look of a three-bladed airplane prop. Step into the "cockpit" and surely you will want to fly.
