Hank Williams Jr. Silver Dollar Pontiac Up For Auction

I only have to hear the song "My Cheatin' Heart" and I think "Hank Williams Jr." And I'm not a country & western fan. But I'm overwhelmed, sort of, by his car, a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville with an interior that was customised by the one and only Nudie Cohen -- "Rodeo Tailor to the Stars." The Hank Williams Jr. car goes on the block at the RM Auction in Scottsdale, January 21st.
Cohen spent his early years kicking around New York, and eventually made the pilgrimage west to California in his teens. To supplement his earnings, he began making custom rhinestone costumes for entertainers and most famously, for showgirls and strippers. His clients included cowboy couple Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Elvis Presley, Cher, John Lennon, Elton John
and many other famous names. Eventually Nudie turned his talents to cars, particularly Bonnevilles.
This car was ordered by Hank Williams Jr.'s mother, Audrey Williams. Nudie removed all traces of the original interior material and carpeting and replaced it with genuine hand-tooled leather. Then came the application of a galaxy of genuine silver dollars and chrome plated pistols, horseshoes and miniature horses. The coins range in years from 1922 to 1934 -- making them collectables themselves.
The six foot wide steer horns on the front end of the vehicle leave an incredible first impression, while the rear has a full Continental trunk treatment emblazoned with the name Hank Jr. in chrome letters on the wheel cover. The Bonneville is a two-owner car: Audrey Williams and, since 1968, the Smoky Mountain Car Museum -- enclosed in a custom-made Plexiglas case. It runs and drives like new, having benefited from a recent service in preparation for the auction. Estimated selling price? $250,000 to $350,000.
