Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen Nears 200,000 Units
Filed in archive by Gunnar Heinrich on April 16, 2007

Just don't hold your breath. The most evergreen model in Mercedes-Benz's fat catalogue of choices- the Gelaendewagen or "G-Wagen" - has been hand-built at a special factory in Austria since 1979.
Only less rugged than a Uni-Mog, the G-Wagen has been a staple of NATO
, UN, and national armies the world over, not to mention the those armed with American Express. In recent years, the G-Wagen have sold at a respectable rate of around 3,500 trucks per year (nearly a third of which are bought for military applications). And despite the low-volume, DaimlerChrysler doesn't appear to plan on stopping production any time soon.
Which means that by next year, the world will have seen its 200,000th Gelaendewagen.
