Solving Detroit's Problems

Everyone, it seems, has a solution to Detroit's diminishing sales. (That's "Detroit" as in "automakers.") Several critics insist that GM, Ford, and Chrysler should return to the great American car's roots, meaning big, brash, rear-drive, V-8 powered. Others would see manufacturers divest themselves of their "too many" brands. A senior journalist (even older than me) puts the blame on the "Europeanisation" of American car design. Nuts to them all, I say! The only way America can compete is to do what it's always done best: be innovative. Build vehicles that are a step ahead of the other guys. Don't imitate and don't be homogeneous. Create with a sense of glamour, pizzaz, and sometimes outrageous style. Dish up the chrome. When was the last time you looked at an American car and smiled, except at a classic car show?
