The End of Detroit

Reading Bob's post about GM and Toyota, I was reminded of Micheline Maynard's 2003 book The End of Detroit: How the Big Three Lost Their Grip On the American Car Market.

Maynard, Detroit bureau chief for the New York Times, predicted that by the end of the decade, at least "one of the American car makers will no longer existlinks in its current form"... Could it be GM that tumbles first?

Maynard updated her book in 2004 -- I haven't yet read the update. With the way things move in the car business these days, she'll probably have to put out another edition before I get a chance to catch up.
