I always thought the S-Type to be a beautiful automobile. It skillfully updated the 3.8S look for a new generation. The design is unmistakeably Jaguar; lithe, strong, and sexy. In its V-8 version, the performance was more than adequate to the need. Unfortunately, the S-Type suffered from Jag's usual quality maladies, and so has suffered in the marketplace. I always veiwed the S as a car to be leased and returned before it broke. We may one day find that the S-Type R is a true collectible Jag, up there with the Mark II.

Yes and no. The current S-Type is a slopply produced machine - its fit and finish are no where near what Jag standards should be and this is reflected in the model's terrible residuals. While yes the retro design is instantly recognizable, the original version was a rushed package with awkward parts like strange air duct work under the front bumper and bizarre dash on the inside that took the company years to correct. It was half hearted try, honestly.
