Toyota: "We haven't had a sports car in a long while"

Toyota and Subaru have finally confirmed the joint production of a Rear Wheel Drive sports car during a news conference in Tokyo today. The scheduled start of production is slated for 2011. The new model will be sporting the well known Subaru Boxer Engine, likely turbo charged. It is an interesting twist that the long time familiar All Wheel Drive (AWD) Subaru will be moving to a Rear Wheel Drive (RWD).

Toyota needs to have another sports car to replace the now dead Celica, MR2 and Supra sports cars. We're probably all very familiar with Toyota's uncanny ability to produce dependent vehicles, and I'm hoping this joint venture will be a boost for both companies.

Both Subaru and Toyota will be selling their own models of the sports car separately.
