Welcome to China Bland

. No, really, it's a Chinese FAW Benteng, poised to take on Accord and Camry. Undoubtedly there are any number of Chinese automobile journalists ready to complain, just like their European and North American counterparts, about blandness... cars of this type all look the same, etc., but that's what the midsize family segment is made of. The Benteng is based on a Mazda6 platform, as is the Fusion and its cousins, which is no bad thing if handling responsiveness is your game. It comes with a pair of 2.0 liter and 2.3 liter engines, a five-speed manual, ABS with electronic brake force distribution, stability control and six airbags. "Inside Line" says FAW plans on selling 10,000 units the first year, though none will be exported. Car companies hoping to crack the Chinese market must have a local partner, which explains the Ford/Mazda involvement.Permalink: Welcome to China Bland
