Car Safety Tips

Feeling comfortable in our cars is important to many of us. All we have to do is notice the widespread use of cell phones, CD's, and GPS technology on any road or highway to prove this fact. But safety, not comfort, should be at the top of everyone's priority list.
Did you know that wearing a winter coat can be dangerous for a child harnessed in a car seat? In a crash, the coat will squash down, leaving more than the crucial one (and only one) inch between the safety belt and your child. As a solution, strap your kid in normal clothes and put a blanket on top.
Did you know that even if you're buckled in a crash, anything not restrained can kill you?
How many of us transport CDs, books, cups, etc. in our cars? Anything not held down, including a human body, keeps moving at pre-accident speed until it makes final contact. Unrestrained items and unbuckled passengers pose clear danger, causing serious or even fatal injuries.
Did you know that it is imperative to buy a car seat with a clear and known history?
If you're looking to purchase a second-hand car seat, make sure you know its history or you could be endangering your child's life. Car seats are not re-usable after accidents because they could have been damaged or weakened in the crash. If they have been in use more than six years, the plastic of the car seat is no longer sturdy enough to be considered safe. Also if the car seat's harness was treated with chemicals or was ironed, it will probably not hold up in an accident.
